Everyone and their dog is using AI to create ads, social media posts…even signage. Because why not? It’s quick, it’s free, and some can even argue that it’s pretty. Except…
Mostly, it just looks the same. I can scroll through my social media and pinpoint, with 100% accuracy, which ads are designed, and which were created with AI.
And while some of the ads are really good…it looks the same.
I’M NOT AGAINST AI (BUT I AM AGAINST LAZY BRANDING)
Let me make this clear: I am not anti-AI.
I use AI in my own business all the time.
I use it:
As a sounding board for ideas
To help with copywriting blocks
For market research
To organise strategies
To generate placeholder visuals for clients who can’t yet afford custom photography or videography
AI is an incredibly powerful tool when used correctly.
But that’s exactly what it is:
A tool.
Not a replacement for strategy, creativity, and human understanding.
The biggest mistake businesses make when using AI-generated graphics is assuming the visuals are the most important part of marketing.
They’re not.
The real work happens behind the design.
It’s:
- Choosing the right hook
- Understanding your audience
- Solving a problem
- Positioning your brand differently from competitors
- Creating emotional connection
- Building trust
Typing:
“Create an ad for our Spring Special using these photos”
…is not a marketing strategy.
And it’s definitely not brand building.
The issue with AI-generated content isn’t necessarily that it looks bad.
The issue is that it lacks originality, intentionality, and emotional depth. Consumers are becoming increasingly aware of AI-generated marketing…even if they can’t consciously explain why.
People can sense when something feels generic, disconnected, or slightly “off.” You’ve probably experienced it yourself: You see an ad that looks polished, but something about it feels empty or untrustworthy.
That’s because branding is psychological. And AI still struggles to replicate genuine human nuance, storytelling, and emotional intelligence.
When every business starts using the same AI-generated aesthetics, brands lose their uniqueness. And when your brand looks like everyone else’s, people stop paying attention.
Honestly? Sometimes, yes.
If you’re a small business owner and genuinely cannot afford a professional graphic designer yet, using AI is better than throwing together completely chaotic visuals with no direction.
But if you’re going to use AI, use it intentionally.
Don’t let AI define your brand. Train it to support your brand.
That means:
- Keeping your branding consistent
- Using your actual brand colours
- Maintaining your tone of voice
- Creating designs that still feel human
- Using AI to support strategy — not replace it
AI should help you create better branding, not more generic branding.
When You Should Use AI-Generated Designs
AI can be useful when:
- You need quick placeholder visuals
- You’re creating low-priority content
- Your designer is unavailable for something urgent
- You’re testing concepts or ideas
- You need affordable content creation as a startup
But even then, your content should still feel aligned with your brand identity.
Not like every side-hustle startup using five different fonts and changing colours every week.
When You Should Not Use AI for Branding and Marketing
If you can afford a professional designer or strategist, please don’t replace them with AI-generated graphics. A strong designer does more than make things look pretty.
A strategic designer:
- Builds trust
- Creates consistency
- Helps customers recognise your brand
- Improves perceived value
- Positions you differently in the market
- Creates visuals that actually support sales
Good branding saves you money long-term because it prevents constant rebranding, inconsistent messaging, and forgettable marketing.
AI-generated branding may feel cheaper now, but generic branding becomes expensive when your audience stops paying attention.
AI Design Is a Trend, But Human Connection Will Always Matter
AI-generated content is everywhere right now because it’s new, fast, and exciting. But trends fade. And eventually, audiences will become tired of seeing the same recycled AI aesthetics over and over again.
People crave authenticity.
They want connection.
They want trust.
They want brands that feel real.
And that’s something human creativity still does best. Because AI creates quickly. But humans create connction.
So… Should You Use AI for Your Business Graphics?
Here’s the honest answer:
If you truly cannot afford a designer yet, use AI carefully and strategically. But don’t confuse “fast” with “effective.” And don’t assume AI alone can build a memorable, trustworthy brand.
The moment you have the budget, invest in:
- A graphic designer
- A brand strategist
- A cohesive visual identity
- Human-led creativity backed by strategy
Because branding isn’t just about content. It’s about connection. And connection is still deeply human.
